If all you want for Christmas is a holiday, then you're in luck.
Boxing Day is one of the best days of the year to score a cheap holiday, with many travel companies using December 26 to launch their "biggest sale of the year", and reports of up to 70 per cent off airfares.
"Over the past couple of years, we've seen incredible Boxing Day sale fares to Europe, America, Asia and around Australia, where Aussies saved up to 70 per cent off normal ticket prices," says Amy Wei, head of KAYAK and Cheapflights for the Asia Pacific.
Here are some of the experts' top tips for scoring the best holiday deals in the Boxing Day sales.
1. GET UP EARLY
"You've got to act quickly, because these sales typically only last for a few days. To snag yourself a bargain holiday, the secret is to be ready bright and early on Boxing Day," says Wei.
2. STAY UP LATE
Boxing Day arrives in Australia before Europe and North America, so if you stay up late you could nab the very best Christmas sales from European and American airlines when they're released, according to the experts at Cheapflights.
3. ADD IT UP
"Remember to think about the total cost of the trip. A bargain flight that leaves at 6am can get expensive since you're more likely to need a taxi to get to the airport," says Angus Kidman, editor-in-chief at finder.com.au.
4. KEEP AN OPEN MIND
"Have an open mind about your destination. You'll often find the biggest bargains are for places that aren't necessarily on your bucket list," says Kidman.
5. TRY THE ROUTES LESS TRAVELLED
Play around with routes and you could discover savings and cool new destinations. If you are travelling to Europe, have a look at different gateway cities instead of London and Paris. There are many cheaper flight options for flying within Asia too, like getting to Sri Lanka via Malaysia, or to Japan via Singapore. When travelling long haul, consider adding a stopover at an airline's homeport - and voila, another exciting city to explore.
6. PICK YOUR DATES
"Be flexible with dates and try and travel during off-season. This can get a little tricky with school holidays, but if you're able to travel off-peak or in shoulder seasons, you'll generally find better deals," says Kidman.
7. THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX
"Don't be blinded by loyalty. Yes you might prefer to fly Singapore Airline, but if Scoot has a knockout deal for a trip to Asia, you can put the savings towards an extra night away or a better hotel," says Kidman.
8. UPGRADE YOURSELF
"Often you can find premium economy or business class tickets at a much lower price during these sales," the Cheapflights team says. "Definitely worth considering for long-haul flights, where good sleep means you can hit the ground running to make the most of your holiday time."
