Police found a man dead at a south Edmonton motel early Sunday, 12 hours after responding to a weapons complaint.

Police did not say how the man died but said it appears his death was non-criminal in nature and happened while officers were negotiating with him.

Officers were called to the Royal Lodge Motel on Gateway Boulevard and 38th Avenue just after 2 p.m., Saturday afternoon, police said in a release.

Another man was found suffering from a gunshot wound. He was treated and taken to hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

The suspect was believed to be inside the motel, said police spokesperson Scott Pattison and he was found dead about 2 a.m. Sunday.

Edmonton police continue to investigate the incident and said in a release it is considered to be an in-custody death as officers were negotiating with him at the time.
