Pune: The Khadak police on Friday filed a case against unidentified person/s for running a page titled 'Devendra Fadnavis for Maharashtra' on a social networking website and posting objectionable content, defaming Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leaders.
According to the police, the page also features several vulgar comments on women political leaders. The police has registered an offence under provisions of the Information Technology Act.
26-year-old Manali Bhilare, an NCP member, lodged the police complaint after noticing the webpage and the defamatory, objectionable posts on it.
As per details provided in the complaint, members of NCP's social media cell were browsing the social networking site when they stumbled upon the page, which has 14.26 lakh followers.
After going through content on the social media page, the members claim to have found many objectionable photographs of senior NCP leaders. Members have said that webpage also included several uncorroborated charges against NCP leaders.
The police complaint states that fake and misleading text had been uploaded on the page.
The complaint also mentions the vulgar comments on photographs apart from use of abusive language against women office bearers and NCP leaders. Further, Bhilare has claimed that many defamatory posts and fabricated news articles have been uploaded on the page.
Senior inspector Rajendra Mokashi of the Khadak police station said that a case has been registered against unidentified persons for uploading defamatory and objectionable text as well as photographs on the social networking site. "We have reported the issue to the cybercrime cell and we have requested them to pull down the posts from the social networking site without any delay," he stated.
