A 15-year-old is being charged with murder in last month's killing of a prominent local doctor, according to court documents.

The teen and 18-year-old Ka’Ron Bickham-Hurst were arrested Dec. 14 in the Nov. 20 killing of Dr. Kevin Rodgers. Rodgers, 61, was found face-down in his kitchen with gunshot wounds to his stomach and head, according to a probable cause affidavit. He was pronounced dead soon after responders arrived at his home in the 7500 block of Ballinshire South.

On Thursday, the Marion County Juvenile Court authorized the filing of a juvenile delinquency petition and two motions for a waiver of juvenile jurisdiction. If the waiver is granted, the teen would be able to be charged for murder as an adult.

The teen has been charged on three counts: murder, burglary at the Rodgers home and burglary at a home in the 7000 block of Harrier Circle, which occurred on the same day.

An attorneys-only pre-trial conference is set for Jan. 25. A hearing for the waiver has not been scheduled.

Bickham-Hurst faces one count of felony murder and one count of burglary in connection with the slaying, as well as one count of burglary and four counts of theft in an unrelated matter. He has a pre-trial conference scheduled for Jan. 30.

The morning of the killing, Rodgers’ neighbor reported a suspicious tan Chevrolet parked in the neighborhood and said that four males had gotten out of it for five minutes and later ran back to the car and sped off.

Rodgers was the program director of the emergency medicine residency at the IU School of Medicine and was the president of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine. He was also an assistant lacrosse coach at Cathedral High School.
