Alvin and the Chipmunks

Although this isn’t set during the festive season, is it really Christmas if you don’t watch an instalment in the Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise? And where better to start than the beginning, when singing rodents Alvin, Simon and Theodore are taken captive by a mischievous manager, presenting their rightful owner with the near-impossible challenge of finding them.

 

Blackadder’s A Christmas Carol

British sitcom Blackadder put a unique twist on Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol holiday tale back in 1988 – and it’s been televised ever since, so it must be good. The hour-long special tells the story of a Victorian shopkeeper who’s encouraged to give meanness a try when the Spirt of Christmas pays him a visit. Ironic, right?

Deck the Halls

Buddy Hall sets out to create a holiday display that’s bright enough to be seen from space, while neighbour Steve Finch does all he can to stop him… need I go on? Deck the Halls is a film synonymous with the Christmas period – and if you’ve missed it on your local 24-hour Christmas film channel this year, you can tune in on Netflix.

Jingle All the Way

Arnold’s in full on self-parody comedy cash-in mode in this festive rib tickler. He competes with another dad, on a mission to track down the must have Christmas Toy for his son, a pre-The Phantom Menace Jake Lloyd (it’s difficult to know which was the career highlight for boy who would become Vader, but the IMDb credits aren’t particularly flattering reading). Worth watching for the mid-90s fromage-fest alone.

Love Actually

If you can get past that bloke from The Walking Dead trying to seduce his best friend’s wife and Hugh Grant being Prime Minister then Love Actually is, erm, actually a pretty fun, heartfelt, quintessentially British ensemble comedy. Also notable for Bill Nighy’s rude Christmas song, Martin Freeman’s turn as an adult film star, and a pre-Taken Liam Neeson being a bloody good single dad/widower.

 

Mariah Carey’s Merriest Christmas 

Mariah Carey’s Merriest Christmas is essentially a Corden-less episode of The Late Late Show with a twist: various stars – including Babyface – work together to conduct a heartfelt reading of The Night Before Christmas, before Carey takes to the stage to perform her smash hit festive record, All I Want For Christmas Is You.

 

Miracle on 34th Street

A surprisingly brilliant remake of the 1930s classic Christmas movie, sees the adorable, 90s cutie-pie Mara Wilson (Matilda, Mrs Doubtfire) come to the aid of her friend, a shopping mall Santa Claus (Richard Attenborough), who claims he’s the real deal. It’s a cold, cold heart that won’t shed a tear during the courtroom scene.

Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol has had more interpretations than Wham’s Last Christmas, and the story of an cold-hearted 80s TV executive is right up there with the with the best of them (although not as good as The Muppets’ version obvs.) Bill Murray is on top form here as Frank Cross, the uncaring big shot who gets a long-overdue visit from a trio of spirits on Christmas Eve.

 

The Night Before

There’s nothing wrong with having a drink on Christmas Eve – but some people take it a bit too far. Case in point: The three best friends in The Night Before who decide to go on a final booze-up before putting an end to their tradition of wild holiday partying. The moral of the story? Drink responsibly – and don’t do drugs.
