A husband and wife duo from Corozal are facing charges for the Christmas holiday after police searched their home and found a lot more than 10 grams of marijuana.
Police say that they searched the San Roman home of Ismael and Marcelina Cano around 3:50 a.m. yesterday, and found the drugs in varying quantities hidden in three rubber boots. One boot contained 30 grams, another 70 grams, and the third boot contained 164 grams, for a total of 264 grams. Three minors were present at the time of the search.
Police have since charged Ismael and Marcelina Cano with two counts of drug trafficking and one count of possession of controlled drugs. The seizure comes at a time where police have been scaling up their presence and making seizures through its Addressing Crime Together (ACT) initiative, which has seen the seizure of 44,455.5grams of marijuana 5,073 grams and Cocaine, in Belize City alone. Twelve persons have been arrested on drug-related charges since the launch of the operation in October.
Police Commissioner Allen Whylie said that the department intends to sustain the operation into 2018. The ComPol assured that the operations cannot continue indefinitely because of the level of human resources that it takes to sustain it, but he did not give an official date for the termination of the operations.
