The mercury will linger above freezing Saturday until midnight when temperatures will fall rapidly back into the upper 20's.

The National Weather Service says that mushy slush in parking lots, sidewalks or side streets will freeze and be very slippery.

Meteorologist Evan Heller had an updated Christmas Day weather report late this afternoon.

"The latest forecast shows us getting 4 to 6 inches of snow starting on Christmas Eve around 10 p.m. and ending early Christmas afternoon," Heller said noting it was a perfect snowfall for children. "As they go to bed, they'll see the snow falling. And then they'll wake up to the Capital Region's biggest snowfall so far in the season."

Here's the forecast through the Christmas weekend:

Saturday night: Temperatures will remain above 32 until midnight when they will begin falling below freezing. Albany area residents can expect light drizzle and fog.

As of 5 p.m. the winter advisory has been lifted for the Albany area. But it remains in place until 6 p.m. for Saratoga, Glen Falls and Schenectady where ice may glaze the streets more thickly.

Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

Sunday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 33. Light and variable wind becoming northwest around 5 mph in the morning.

Sunday night: Snow, mainly after midnight. Low around 24. Northeast wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Christmas Day: From 4 to 6 inches of snow likely, mainly before 1 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 30. Windy, with a west wind 8 to 18 mph. Winds may gust as high as 46 mph and a wind advisory may be issued. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Monday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 14.

During Saturday, roads were slippery and the state Department of Transportation warned of accidents around the region during the busy holiday weekend.

Albany International Airport reported mostly on-time arrivals and departures as of 5 p.m. Check the airport's arrivals and departures site for the latest information.

National Grid's website said 357 customers in Saratoga County were without power just before 5 p.m., according to National Grid's website. About 56 were without power in Schenectady County but power had been restored to 500 in Warren County. Less than 8 customers in Albany and Rensselaer counties remained without power.
