An elderly couple in the United States were arrested for carrying 60 pounds (27 kg) of weed across states as Christmas gifts for friends. Peter Bernard’s Yuletide who was caught near Bradshaw, Nebraska said he also had plans to dress up in a tuxedo and don green hat while giving away marijuana cookie bars to his friends from a pillowcase. Last year, voters in California, Nevada, Maine and Massachusetts had voted to legalize recreational marijuana. People in these states also have plans to give marijuana flavoured baked goods and decoration as gifts.

Daily Mail quoted Bernard, a Taunton, Massachusetts, pot lover who heads the Massachusetts Growers Advocacy Council as saying, “That’s me exercising my right to give marijuana this Christmas. Not everyone’s plans are quite so flamboyant, but for many pot lovers, this Christmas is much more about reefer than wreaths. Gift-giving has long been a part of marijuana culture, and the drug’s newly legal status is a source of Yuletide celebration in four states.”
With legalisation of marijuana, people can give away pot to others. Aaron Smith, executive director of the National Cannabis Industry Association was quoted as saying, “People consume cannabis on the holidays and they always have. Now they are doing so through a regulated system.” Going by statistics, legal sales of marijuana witnesses a bump around the holidays. It is legalised in Alaska, Colorado, Oregon and Washington. However, the drug is still illegal on the federal level and hence driving with it across state lines or mailing it to someone are punishable.
