The Bombay High Court on Friday “rejected and set aside” Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao’s February 2016 order granting sanction to the CBI to prosecute former State CM Ashok Chavan in the Adarsh housing society scam, after holding that the incumbent Governor “has no jurisdiction’ to review the previous Governor’s order “in the absence of fresh evidence”.
The order came as a major relief to ex-CM and an acute embarrassment for the BJP-led alliance Government. HC Bench of Justices SS Jadhav and Ranjit More ruled the order passed by the Governor “cannot be sustained and same is accordingly quashed”.
