A bank has returned most of the £20,000 which was sent to the wrong account.

Santander has returned £15,000 to customer Mark Leighton after a transfer of funds which went wrong.

But he has still not got back all of the money.

Santander said he must go through the courts to retrieve the rest from the person who accidentally received it.

Earlier this month we told how Mark transferred his account at Santander to a joint account with partner Laura Maddison but it didn’t arrive.

Mark admitted making a mistake with the sort code.

The money was received by a customer at the other bank and it is believed some of it has been spent.

Mark said: “Santander will forward information for the next step.

“I have managed to get hold of some of the funds but not all of it.

“I don’t understand why Santander did not put a stop to the transaction earlier.”

The money was meant as a deposit on a house.

Mark said he told Santander about the mistake a day later as soon as he realised what he had done.

He said he believed he had notified the bank in enough time to stop the transaction.

A spokeswoman for Santander said: “Once a claim has been raised by a customer regarding a payment made in error, Santander will contact the receiving bank to request that the funds are placed in withholdings.

“The recipient bank will then contact their account holder, requesting their consent to debit their account.

“If the account holder consents, the funds will be returned to the sender however, if consent is not provided and they can provide evidence that they are entitled to the funds, the sending bank will be notified that the claim has been rejected. Customers will be advised of the outcome of their claim.

“In this case, Santander has returned £15,560 of the customer’s money.

“Mr Leighton can pursue the recovery of any outstanding funds from the beneficiary by applying to the court.”
