A New York lawmaker who has long called for greater disclosure when it comes to online political ads is backing a new proposal from Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
On Thursday Cuomo announced he would ask lawmakers to pass legislation requiring online campaign ads to bear the name of the organization paying for the content. He also wants groups paying for online campaign ads to register with the state, just like groups paying for traditional ads.
Democratic state Sen. Todd Kaminsky of Long Island has already introduced similar legislation and says tighter rules when it comes to online political ads are needed to prevent dirty election tricks and ensure that voters know who is trying to influence their elections.
Lawmakers will begin the 2018 session next month.
