A mother of two killed by an alleged impaired driver Thursday is being remembered as an “angel” by friends.
Karla Groten, 40, was crossing the road at Kingston Rd. and Warden Ave. when she was struck by a vehicle that didn’t remain at the scene, police said.
“Karla leaves behind her daughter and son and grieving family. She was a kind, warm and beautiful soul who will be remembered for her pure heart,” a GoFundMe page said.
Many took to social media to grieve.

Karla Groten, a mother of two, was stuck and killed in a hit-and-run this week in Scarborough. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help her two teen children.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to her friends and especially family and children … may they have a happy holidays knowing their mother is a Christmas angel in heaven now,” wrote Frank Galipo.
Groten was also known as a person who helped others as she was a survivor of domestic abuse and worked with the Dr. Roz’s Healing Place for women fleeing family violence.
“We are devastated to share the loss of Karla, a beautiful soul who was a valued member of the DRHP,” Dr. Roz Roach wrote.
David Opalka, 28, of Toronto has been charged with numerous offences, including impaired driving causing death and failing to remain at the scene of the collision.
