The World Jewish Congress criticized a resolution passed regarding Jerusalem and calling to downgrade the status of its Tel Aviv embassy to a “liaison office” in a move of “solidarity” with “the oppressed people of Palestine.”
CEO and Executive Vice President of the WJC Robert Singer said the decision could have “negative repercussions for South Africa and simultaneously undermine prospects for advancing peace efforts between Israel and the Palestinians.”
South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress, during the final few days of the ANC biannual National Conference on Wednesday, unanimously passed the resolution to turn the embassy in Ramat Gan into a “liason office.”
The move comes amid a barrage of international backlash since US President Donald Trump’s highly-contested decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel which has triggered UN action.
The United States, last week, used their veto power to block a Security Council resolution contradicting Trump’s declaration with 14 countries voting in favor including key allies Britain, France and Italy. In an effort to further reverse the controversial move, a General Assembly vote will be held on Thursday with an expected anti-US response in a continued attempt to isolate the decision.
Pro-Palestinian activists around the world have condemned Trump’s decision, with many engaging in the ‘day of rage’ protests and demonstrations that have had a global reach.
