Residents allege high radiation level, MCG seals mobile tower

GURUGRAM: The MCG on Friday sealed a telecom complex in Ashok Vihar after residents complained about high radiation levels in the area.
The telecom complex had one functional tower and another tower was under construction.

According to MCG officials, they had asked the owner of the telecom complex multiple times to produce permissions for setting up the towers but they were made to wait before it was finally established that he did not have the required approvals.

"The owner did not have required approvals and further, there was a complaint by residents about radiation levels in the area," said an MCG official. He added that cases of sealing telecom towers were rare because it took multiple permissions and the procedure was quite meticulous.

Despite awareness campaigns on mobile tower installations, assuring they are not a health hazard, MCG gets many complaints from residents about radiations.

Multiple cases have been filed by residents against mobile towers installed across Gurgaon. A couple of such cases are also pending in the Punjab and Haryana high court. On an average, MCG gets 10 complaints against mobile towers per month.

The official said in a lot of these cases, the complaints were due to lack of awareness, and in some cases, out of spite.

"A lot of times people complain as they don't like the fact that their neighbours are making money and they are not able to," said the official.

Last year, the municipal body had also formed a district-level grievance redressal committee where residents can submit their complaints and queries about telecom towers.

On Friday, MCG also sealed a seven-floor residential building in Kirti Nagar following a complaint at the CM window and one residential building within 900 metres of the ammunition depot.
