Shaheed Memorial Cricket Tournament starts at UPES ground

The fourth  ‘Shaheed Memorial Cricket Tournament’ started at the campus of the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), Dehradun on Wednesday.

Conceptualised in the year 2014, the event is organised every year by UPES to generate a funds for the family of a ‘martyr’ soldier of the Indian Armed Forces from Uttarakhand.

This year, the tournament is being organized in the memory of Late Havildar Narendar Singh Bisht of IV Garhwal Rifles who attained martyrdom during a ceasefire violation by the Pakistani Army in the Uri Sector of Jammu and Kashmir on August 7 this year. 

 

Informing about the event, Director – Media, UPES, Arun Dhand informed that this tournament reflects the gratitude and respect UPES has for the soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces who bravely give away their life for the safety and integrity of their motherland. He said that Havildar Bisht, who originally hailed from Village Nakholi of the Narayanbagad Block in District Chamoli, resided in Selaqui, Dehradun.

 A total of ten teams from Government Organizations and the Indian Army, including the hosts UPES, are participating in the event this year, he said.

Inaugurating the tournament President UPES, Utpal Ghosh and Chancellor UPES,  S J  Chopra paid glowing tributes to the martyr Havildar Narendar Singh Bisht. The UPES will present a cheque of Rs 1,31,000  to the family of the martyr on the concluding day of the tournament. This tournament is going to be a great opportunity for youngsters to hone their talent.
