BOYS BASKETBALL

NOVI 67, BRIGHTON 43: Thanks to a 15-0 first-quarter start, the Wildcats (1-4, 1-2) snapped their four-game losing streak with a KLAA Gold Division win Dec. 21 against the shot Bulldogs (1-4, 1-2).

Mihir Bhandage and Traveon Maddox, Jr. each scored 22 points to lead Novi, while Nik Williams chipped in with 14.

Dominic Valdes and Matt Buschman led Brighton with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

NORTHVILLE 61, HARTLAND 45: Mark Grimes scored a game-high 25 points, including three triples, to propel the Mustangs (4-2, 2-1) to the KLAA Gold Division triumph Dec. 21 over the host Eagles (4-2, 1-1).

Grimes had 11 in the first quarter and 11 in the fourth, while Steven Morrissey chipped in with 13 points, all in the second and third quarters. Northville was 10-of-16 from the foul line.

Brandon Harrison led Hartland with 20 points, including four triples and 4-of-4 at the line. Hartland was 13-of-20 on free throws.

STEVENSON 73, CHURCHILL 52: In a Livonia city rivalry game played Dec. 21 at Churchill, the Spartans (4-0) got out to a fast 27-16 lead after one quarter and pretty much maintained control the rest of the way.

“Came out firing in the first quarter as we were able to put up 27 points by getting out on fast breaks and attacking the basket,” Stevenson assistant coach Chris Haldane said.

The Chargers (2-4) got to within 35-27 at halftime, but a 20-13 third quarter by Stevenson opened up a 15-point edge going into the fourth.

Top performers for Stevenson were Josh Marquedant (18 points, five rebounds), Chris Fazica (13 points, six boards), Parker Graham (11 points) and Thomas Demers (11 points, eight rebounds).

“Chris (Fazica) has played excellent defense and continued that today,” Haldane said. “He also is grabbing a lot of rebounds for us despite being a guard.”

For Churchill, Joel Forgacs and Luke Jaroszewicz scored 16 and 13 points, respectively.

CANTON 86, CHURCHILL 28: To say the Canton Chiefs are off to a hot start this season would be an understatement, especially after a 58-point win Dec. 19 against the visiting Chargers.

Canton, 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the KLAA Black Division, got out to a 27-4 lead after one quarter and enjoyed a huge 53-11 halftime advantage.

Six players reached double figures for the Chiefs, led by B. Artis White (16 points), Vinson Sigmon (13 points) and Ben Stesiak (12 points). Helping the cause with 11 points were Chase Meredith and Darius Robinson while Eian Barker scored 10. 

Livonia Churchill dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the division.

JOHN GLENN 62, SALEM 46: A 15-point night by Westland John Glenn's Joe Moon IV sparked the Rockets (1-2, 1-2) to the KLAA Black Division win Dec. 19 over the host Rocks (1-3, 0-2).

 Jordan Ingram and Amit Tiwari scored 11 and nine points, respectively, for Salem.

WAYNE 59, PLYMOUTH 50: The Wildcats (2-2, 0-1) trailed 16-6 after one quarter and could not make up the deficit in a KLAA Black game played Dec. 19 at Wayne Memorial (2-1, 1-0).

Isiah Lewis led the victorious Zebras with 21 points followed by Rashad Williams (13 points) and Va'Shawn Ward (10) 

Plymouth's Anthony Crump registered 21 points while A.J. Neal added 10.

STEVENSON 87, HOWELL 66: After emerging with a 22-20 lead after one quarter, Livonia Stevenson (3-0, 2-0) pulled away for the KLAA Gold Division win Dec. 19 over the host Highlanders (3-1, 1-1).

Devin Dunn led the way for Stevenson with 32 points, while Parker Graham tallied 19 points (14 in Stevenson's 23-point second quarter). George Ferguson added 13.

Howell was led by Jack Palo and Johnny Shields, who scored 26 and 20 points, respectively.

NORTHVILLE 54, BRIGHTON 36: Junior Steven Morrissey provided a lift off the bench with 10 points as the Mustangs (3-2, 1-1) led from start-to-finish en route to a KLAA Gold Division win Dec. 19 over the host Bulldogs (1-1, 0-1).

Brandon Stevens and Niko Barach added eight points apiece, while Gary Laskowski, Mark Grimes and Ryan Pumper each chipped in with six. The Mustangs were 9-of-17 on free throws.

"We had better effort and were more committed to guarding and really forced Brighton into tough shots, which we defended well," Northville coach Todd Sander said. "Niko was the difference. He gave us a tremendous lift on both ends of the floor and helped our younger guys get in the right spots. Pumper really controlled the glass when he was in and gives tremendous effort."

Dalton Porth had seven points for Brighton, which finished 9-of-19 from the line.

GRAND BLANC 71, NOVI 57: On Dec. 19, Lonnell Martin scored 23 points and Takarus Smith added 19 as the host Bobcats (4-1, 2-0) won their fourth straight with a KLAA Gold Division victory over the Wildcats (0-4, 0-2).

Junior Jiovanni Miles led Novi with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Mihir Bhandage added 12 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

NOVI 43, BRIGHTON 36: Mikayla Lynch led the way with 11 points on Dec. 21 as the host Wildcats (5-2, 2-1) clipped the Bulldogs (4-2, 2-1) in a KLAA Gold Division encounter.

Ellie Mackay chipped in with 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists as Novi led 26-17 at halftime and 36-30 after three quarters. Anna Biberstein and Julia Lalain added eight and seven points, respectively.

Sophie Dziekan and Dana Schemanske led Brighton with 12 points apiece.

HARTLAND 48, NORTHVILLE 29: Graysen Cockerham scored 17 points and Whitney Sollom added 11 as the Eagles (4-2, 1-1) soared to a KLAA Gold Division triumph Dec. 21 over the host Mustangs (4-2, 0-2).

Nicole Martin scored seven points in a losing cause for Northville.

JOHN GLENN 48, PLYMOUTH 41: Sydney McCaig scored 13 points and Chantal LeDoux added 10 on Dec. 21, but the visiting Wildcats were unable to prevail against Westland John Glenn.

Plymouth dropped to 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the KLAA Black Division.

“It was clear we were not ready to play from the tip,” Plymouth coach Ryan Ballard said. “That's on me. I have to do a better job getting our team to play hard for 32 minutes. Give credit to John Glenn. They had a terrific game plan and had us searching for answers all evening.”

NOVI 44, GRAND BLANC 43: On Dec. 19, senior guard Ellie Mackay had 17 points, seven rebounds and two assists as the host Wildcats (4-2, 1-1) rallied in the final quarter to down the Bobcats (4-4, 1-1) in a KLAA Gold Division game. 

Ireland Whalen and Juia Lalain chipped in with nine and seven points, respectively, for Novi.

Zada Lacy and Sacsha Greene paced Grand Blanc with 16 and 14 points, respectively.

WAYNE 81, PLYMOUTH 59: Wayne Memorial senior guard Camree Clegg led all scorers with 28 points and junior guard Jeanae Terry contributed 24 points and nine assists to spark the visiting Zebras (3-2, 2-0) to this KLAA Black Division win on Dec. 19.

For Plymouth (3-2, 0-1), Chantal LeDoux scored 24 points and Rebecca Przybylo added 12.

CANTON 32, CHURCHILL 19: On Dec. 19 at Livonia Churchill, Ashley Criscenti's double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds) was the catalyst for Canton (3-2, 2-0).

Helping the Chiefs' cause with seven points and 10 boards was guard Alaina Heitmeyer. Takanta George scored five points for the Chargers (2-3, 0-2).

"We played some pretty solid defense holding Churchill to just five points in the first half," Canton coach Rob Heitmeyer said.

Canton led 10-2 after one quarter and 15-5 at halftime.

HOWELL 61, STEVENSON 21: Alexis Miller scored 41 points to carry Howell to this Dec. 19 victory.

For Livonia Stevenson, Sarah Tanderys canned five treys and finished with 17 points.

SALEM 57, JOHN GLENN 51 (2OT): The visiting Rocks needed double overtime on Dec. 19 to get past Westland John Glenn. Salem improved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the KLAA Black Division.

BOYS HOCKEY

NORTHVILLE 3, BRIGHTON 1: Junior goalie Nate Williams starred making 34-of-35 saves as the Mustangs (6-3, 2-1) stunned the defending Division 1 state champion Bulldogs (6-2-1, 4-1-1) in a KLAA Gold Division game Dec. 20 at the Kensington Valley Ice House.

Senior forward Devin Laba scored twice for Northville including a power play goal at 15:33 of the opening period from Owen Finkbeiner and Jack Sargent followed by an unassisted empty netter with 1:27 left in the final period.

Noah Eckerle's goal at 7:47 of the second period from Joe Tobon and Jimmy Dales made it 2-0 before Adam Conquest countered for Brighton with a goal at 15:30 of the same period.

Brighton goalie Robert Pegrum had to make just eight saves.

FRANKLIN 4, GRAND BLANC 1: A four-goal third period Dec. 20 propelled host Livonia Franklin to bounce back from a 1-0 deficit against the Bobcats.

Scoring for the Patriots (in succession) were Trevor Van Vliet, Hunter Musser, Trey Ziebol and Dakota Keaton (empty netter).

Playing a strong game in net for the victory was Will Augustine.

CHURCHILL 3, SALEM 2 (OT): On Dec. 20 at Livonia's Eddie Edgar Arena, Jordan Venegoni scored at 5:06 of overtime to give Livonia Churchill the KLAA Black Division win.

Also scoring for the Chargers were Zack Vendittelli and Adam Sinclair. Helping the cause with 28 stops was goalie Chris Sergison.

Garnering both Salem goals was Colin Goleniak. Taking the loss in net was Max Van Wert (25 saves). 

HARTLAND 3, NOVI 2: Josh Albring scored the game-winning goal from Jake Behnke and Kiernan Carlile with 11:04 remaing to give the state-ranked Eagles (7-2, 5-0) the KLAA Gold Division win Dec. 19 over the host Wildcats (4-7, 1-6) at Novi Ice Arena.

Brendan Tulpa and Behnke each finished with a goal and assists.

Maanas Sharma (from Evan Chippa and Nathan Graff) and Mitchell Grinshpun (power play from Mike Small and Sharma) countered with goals for Novi.

Brett Tome went all the way in goal for Hartland, while Ethan Hunsinger was in net for Novi.

BOYS SWIMMING

PLYMOUTH 116, JOHN GLENN 67: The Wildcats prevailed in this Dec. 21 dual meet, led by individual wins from Colton Knowles (200 IM, 2:07.40), Eric Knudson (50 free, 24.76), Ben Kirchoff (diving, 167.40 points), Bradley McWilliams (100 fly, 1:04.47) and Ethan Byrnes (100 free, 54.43).

Plymouth also took two relays. In the 200 free relay, the quartet of Byrnes, Knudson, Bassil Syed and Logan Kendall won with a time of 1:40.70. Taking first in the 400 free relay, finishing in 3:41.05 were Knowles, Kendall, McWilliams and Byrnes.

The Wildcats, now 1-0 on the season, will host Livonia Franklin 6:30 p.m. Jan. 4 at Salem High School.

NORTHVILLE 121, BRIGHTON 65: The Mustangs (2-0, 1-0) captured nine-of-12 events Dec. 19 to defeat the host Bulldogs (3-2, 0-1) led by double winners Travis Nitkiewicz, Trevor DeGroot and Kirk Maibach.

Travis Nitkiewicz swept the 200- and 500-yard freestyles in 1:48.8 and 5:00.09, respectively. DeGroot captured the 200 individual medley (2:02.78) and 100 freestyle (50.06), while Kirk Maibach took firsts in the 100 butterfly (53.72) and 100 backstroke (56.82).

Arthur Greenlee won the 50 freestyle (22.66) and teamed up with Maibach, Travis Nitkiewicz and Jason Nitkiewicz for a win in the 200 medley relay (1:39.69). Northville's 200 freestyle relay team of Cameron Heaven, Jason Nitkiewicz, Craig Maibach and Greenlee took the 200 freesyle relay (1:32.54).

Northville's 400 freestyle relay team of Heaven, DeGroot, Travis Nitkiewicz and Kirk Maibach also won in 3:22.7.

Brighton got firsts from Cade Hammond (1-meter diving, 286.50 points) and Drew Panzl (100 breaststroke, 1:00.52).

"They have a beautiful facility," Northville coach Rich Bennetts said. "It is the second time we have been there and it is very impressive. We had a few good swims from Curtis Lee, Jason and Travis Nitkiewicz and Cameron Heaven. Overall I would say that we are sore and tired and we swam that way."

NOVI 121, HARTLAND 71: Adam Carozza captured the 200 freestyle (1:50.59) and 100 butterfly (55.50) as the Wildcats (4-0, 1-0) opened KLAA Gold Division action Dec. 19 at home with a dual meet win over the Eagles.

Carozza also teamed up with Max Robbins, Alexander Yuan and Maxwell Williams for a win in the 200 freestyle relay (1:34.41).

Other first-place finishers for Novi included Yuan, 200 individual medley (2:06.79); Jack McClure, 1-meter diving (217.60 points); Brian Son, 500 freestyle (5:10.95); and Connor Johns, 100 backstroke (1:02.09).

Novi's 200 medley relay team of Daniel Chung, Son, Yuan and Robbins also won in 1:47.53.

Michael Harris led Hartland with firsts in the 50- and 100 freestyles with times of 22.63 and 50.18, respective. Connor Krueger added a win in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.93), while the Eagles also won the 400 freestyle relay (3:59.70).

GIRLS GYMNASTICS

NORTHVILLE 142.25, SALEM 139.175: On Dec. 20, the Mustangs (2-0) were led by sophomore Maria Scavnicky, who posted scores of 9.675 (balance beam) and 9.15 (floor exercise) in a KLAA meet against the host Rocks.

Junior Lora Haupt also added a 9.025 on floor for Northville.

NORTHVILLE 137.725, LIVONIA RED 129.15: Junior Maria Scavnicky posted a 9.1 on beam and captain Grace Jankowski added a 9.05 on the uneven bars as the Mustangs (1-0) opened their dual meet season with a KLAA victory Dec. 19 at Livonia Churchill.

BOWLING

PLYMOUTH'S DWYER ROLLS 300: The third 300 game in Plymouth High School history was registered Dec. 17 by sophomore Chris Dwyer at the annual Lakeland Invitational held at Century Bowl in Waterford.

Dwyer threw his perfect game in the second game of qualifying and followed that up with a 256 score to finish with a two-game series of 556. His big day nearly lifted the Wildcats to a tourney championship, but they were edged out by the Brandon Blackhawks.

On the girls side, junior Maddie Harden scored a 266 game and three-game series of 692, becoming the first Plymouth girls bowler to win a tournament high game and series at the same event. Her scoreline was 266-213-213.
