NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. – A fire early Friday morning has significantly damaged a popular breakfast and coffee shop, Coffee & Cream, Police Capt. Stephen Riccitelli said.
Around 3:14 a.m., a person getting gas at a 24-hour gas station across the street saw fire coming from the building and called 911, Riccitelli said.
When firefighters arrived, flames were coming from the building, and it took until about 5:30 a.m. for crews to get the fire under control. They remained on scene around 7:30 a.m., as investigators from the state Fire Marshal’s Office, the North Smithfield fire and police departments and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated, Riccitelli said.
The structure of the building, at 3 Greenville Rd., is still standing, but it appears to have sustained significant damage both inside and on the exterior, including a section of the roof that appears to have collapsed, Riccitelli said.
Crews from several nearby communities also responded to the blaze, including Cumberland, Smithfield and Woonsocket, Riccitelli said.
The business incorporated in 1990, according to records on file with the Secretary of State’s office.
