Ganga and Jamuna, the conjoined twins of Nayagarh district, breathed their last at the Sishu Bhawan here late on Wednesday night.
The twins died at around 1 am and their bodies were taken back to Nayagarh by their family members after completion of formalities at the children’s hospital.
Sishu Bhawan Superintendent Saroj Satpathy said the conditions of the twins deteriorated in the night as they experienced problem in breathing and died after their heartbeat stopped. He also informed that doctors were earlier mulling to shift them to AIIMS, New Delhi. Notably, the twins were born to Kishore and Sumitra Dutta of Sarankul at a private clinic on December 1 in Nayagarh district and later admitted to the Sishu Bhawan for better treatment.
The twins were joined at chest and stomach and shared a common heart and a liver.
Health Minister Pratap Jena had announced that the Government would bear all the medical expenses towards their treatment.
