An argument about a cellphone turned into a lethal attack on a 13-year-old school boy in Tamil Nadu's Vellore district yesterday, the Tamil newspaper Thina Thanthi reported.

Here's what happened to the victim, Santosh, according to the report.

  • Santosh was an eight-grader from Veppangaal village. He was a student of Poigai government school.
  • A police investigation revealed that Santosh had sold a cellphone to the boy who allegedly killed him - another eighth-grader from Sozhamur Ramaavaram. Santosh had been asking him to pay him Rs 500 more. The boy said he would take Santosh home and get him the money.
  • Santosh, another classmate of his, and the boy who allegedly killed him set out together.
  • On the way (near Lappai Krishnaavaram), Santosh got into an argument with the student who bought the phone from him. The boy allegedly attacked Santosh with a wooden log, and he died on the spot. The boy placed Santosh's body in a canal and fled.
  • When police went to boy's house, there was nobody home. Everyone had gone missing.
  • Police have registered a case, and are interrogating the classmate of Santosh's who went with him. This classmate told Santosh's parents about the attack, and said that he'd run back home when it happened.
