South Lyon boys suffer first cage loss against Waterford Mott

MILFORD 65, WALLED LAKE CENTRAL 45: Senior guard Aiden Warzecha had 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists to lead the Mavericks (3-1, 2-1) in a Lakes Valley Conference victory Dec. 21 over the visiting Vikings (1-3, 1-2).

Milford, which jumped out to a 22-6 first quarter lead, also got contributions from Kyle Soderberg (17 points, eight rebounds), Nolan Rand (13 points) and Gunnar Gustafson (12 points, 11 boards). The Mavs shot 13-of-22 from the foul line.

Houston Tucker led Central with 11 points.

MOTT 52, SOUTH LYON 47: On Dec. 21, Ashton Franklin scored a game-high 24 points and David McCullum chipped in with 14 as Waterford Mott (5-0, 3-0) trimmed the host Lions (4-1, 2-1) in a battle for first place in the LVC.

Ben Call paced South Lyon with 21 points, while Will Kelley and A.J. Curry added nine and eight, respectively.

LAKELAND 56, HAMTRAMCK 41: Seniors Conner Snell and Cody McComas scored 13 and 11 points, respectively, lifting White Lake Lakeland (4-1) to a non-conference win Dec. 21 at home against the Cosmos (3-1).

Andrew Napier scored a game-high 15 points for Hamtramck.

WALLED LAKE WESTERN 42, SOUTH LYON EAST 30: On Dec. 21, host Walled Lake Western (2-2, 2-0) downed the Cougars (2-4, 0-3) in a LVC encounter.

SOUTH LYON 51, LAKELAND 47: Ben Call and Will Kelley each tallied 13 points on Dec. 19 as the host Lions (4-0, 2-0) downed White Lake Lakeland (3-1, 1-1) in an LVC encounter.

Cody McComas and Kyle Flowers each scored 11, while Cass Phillips contributed 10 for the Eagles.

MILFORD 48, KETTERING 39: On Dec. 19, junior forward Gunnar Gustafson scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Mavericks (2-1, 1-1) stopped the host Captains (1-2, 0-2) in an LVC matchup.

Senior forward Kyle Soderberg added 17 points, while senior guard Aiden Warzecha chipped in with nine rebounds and nine assists.

Jared Daniels tallied all 11 of his points in the opening half for Kettering, but was held scoreless in the second half sparked by the defense of J.T. Sarafa.

WALLED LAKE CENTRAL 58, SOUTH LYON EAST 43: On Dec. 19, Houston Tucker poured in a game-high 28 points host Walled Lake Central (1-2, 1-1) downed the Cougars (2-3, 0-2) in an LVC matchup.

East, unable to overcome a 30-14 halftime deficit, got a team-high 10 points from Marc Garland, while Nick Branton and Zack Guietts-Stafford added eight apiece.

Girls basketball

WALLED LAKE WESTERN 60, SOUTH LYON EAST 39: Jenna Galecki scored 14 points to lead four players in double figures as Walled Lake Western (6-1, 2-1) rolled to a Lakes Valley Conference win against the host Cougars (4-1, 3-1).

Kailee Ford (13), Janara Flowers (12) and Jordan Walczyk (12) also lifte the Warriors, who led 29-22 at halftime before outscoring East 31-17 in the second half.

Rachel Waranauckas led East with 10 points, while Lucy Cronin and Nina Peel added nine and eight, respectively. Mackenzie Mallory added six.

Both teams went 9-of-13 from the foul line.

WALLED LAKE CENTRAL 37, MILFORD 28: Megan Wallace and Lauren Carrannanto scored 10 and eight points, respectively, in a losing cause as the Mavericks (3-5, 1-3) fell Dec. 21 to the host Vikings (3-3, 1-2) in a LVC matchup.

Using a press, Central led 17-9 at halftime and 20-11 after three quarters as Rizaria Franklin led all scorers with 15 points.

SOUTH LYON EAST 49, WALLED LAKE CENTRAL 36: Senior guard Mackenzie Mallory scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Cougars (4-0, 3-0) to an LVC win Dec. 19 over the visiting Vikings (3-2, 0-2).

Lucy Cronin and Rachel Waranauckas chipped in with 11 and 6, respectively, for East, which led 21-9 at halftime and 38-25 after three quarters. East made 6-of-10 free throws.

Rizaria Franklin tallied all 13 of her points in the second half for the Vikings, who made 7-of-13 from the foul line.

SOUTH LYON 39, LAKELAND 20: On Dec. 19, Megan Jawor scored 11 points and Sarah Ash added 10 as the Lions (3-5, 1-2) notched their first LVC victory over host White Lake Lakeland (0-7, 0-3).

Paula Swain added seven for South Lyon.

Unable to overcome a 16-10 halftime deficit, Lakeland got a team-high nine points from senior center Skylar Baer. Junior Kara Kulis and freshman Jenna Baer each added four points as the Eagles made 9-of-17 foul shots.

KETTERING 46, MILFORD 18: On Dec. 19, junior guard Ashley Watson made back-to-back three-pointers in the opening quarter and host Waterford Kettering (3-2, 1-1) went on to earn the LVC victory over the Mavericks (3-4, 1-2).

Milford, despite 10 second-half steals, couldn't overcome a 25-7 halftime deficit as Megan Wallace and Allison Smith scored nine and six points, respectively, in a losing cause.

Boys hockey

LAKELAND 9, WALLED LAKE NORTHERN 0: Tyler Martin had two goals and two assists as White Lake Lakeland exploded for six goals in the second period to mercy the Knights (5-3, 1-2-1) in a Lakes Valley Conference game Dec. 21 at Lakeland Ice Arena.

The Eagles, who jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead, also got a pair of goals from Nick Hrbosky while Hayden Baker, Blake Jackson and Ben Getzen each added a goal and assist each.

Jake Lesnaw and Max Cohen also scored goals, while assists went to Alex Libby (2), Ryan Stichler and Jacob Brown.

Lakeland goalie Bryce Samoylov made 17 saves to earn the shutout.

Girls gymnastics

LAKES VALLEY CONFERENCE TRI-MEET: Huron Valley United posted 41 individual qualifying regional scores and tallied a team-best 135.5 points on Dec. 19 to beat Walled Lake Maroon (128.225) and Walled Lake Gold (122.75) in a three-way meet at Walled Lake Central.
