British lorry drivers being trained by secret services to combat jihadi terrorism

LORRY drivers are being trained to stop jihadis hijacking their trucks to mow down pedestrians in terrorist attacks, it has been revealed.

Lorry drivers are being used to combat terrorism

Home Secretary Amber Rudd told the UK’s top security watchdog that the secret service is working with lorry drivers to combat jihadis.

Parliament’s secret Intelligence and Security Committee published its annual review yesterday.

The report said: “The day after the lorry attack in Nice, the police held an extraordinary meeting of the Security Review Committee.

“More could be done to mitigate against the vulnerabilities around HGVs being used in such attacks in the UK.”

According to the report, Ms Rudd told the panel that she was working with the UK Road Haulage Association to “help ensure that its members have the appropriate security measures in place for their vehicles and staff”.

This is also understood to have been confirmed by the Road Haulage Association, who said they were working with the Government on “intelligence gathering and passing on relevant information”.

Intelligence sharing channels have been set up and drivers are being taught how to be extra vigilant.

A spokesman said: “We always urge our members and their drivers to be vigilant - in terms of themselves, their loads and their trucks.

“In these times of heightened security the importance of vigilance is even more important - even the simple precautionary measures can make a difference.

“Don’t leave your keys unattended at any time.

“Lock your cab every single time you leave it and be careful who you talk to when out on the road - truckstops or cafes for example.”

Heavy goods vehicles such as lorries have been weaponised in recent terrorist attacks.

A rented 19-tonne cargo truck was used to kill 87 and injure more than 400 in Nice in July 2016.

In Berlin last year, 12 Christmas market shoppers were mowed down by hijackers claiming allegiance to ISIS.

Five were killed last April in Stockholm when a stolen truck was ploughed into a busy shopping street.

Other vehicles are also being used by terrorists in similar attacks.

In October this year, a pickup truck slammed into 15 people as it was driven down a bike path in New York.

A similar method was in the Westminster attack in March when a terrorist drove a car into pedestrians on the pavement along Westminster Bridge.

The killer jumped out of the vehicle to carry on his rampage with a knife.

Then in June this year, eight people were killed and 48 others after three men drove a van into pedestrians on London Bridge before getting out and stabbing people in nearby Borough Market.
