SANGAREDDY: In 1930, during India’s freedom struggle, the first session of Andhra Maha Sabha, a people’s organisation in erstwhile Hyderabad state which spearheaded people’s movements among Telugu-speaking populace against the Nizam, was held at Jogipet in the then united Medak district. Legendary writer Suravaram Pratapa Reddy, who published Golconda Patrika and Golconda Kavula Sanchika, presided over it.

The meeting helped freedom fighters provide the required information to people in Telugu language to create consciousness in them against Nizam rule at that time. After the meeting, a library was set up at Jogipet. From the time of freedom struggle to present day, many poets and writers have written several books and articles in Telugu to create awareness among people. During the recent movement for TS statehood, several writers wrote articles, songs and poems to inspire people.

Preserving this literary legacy, writers and poets from areas that fall in erstwhile Medak district have taken part in the just concluded World Telugu Conference in Hyderabad. If Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, a lover of Telugu language and literature, himself belongs to the district, other major poets, who played a key role in making the five-day mega event a grand success, also hail from the district.
