Man Utd defender Luke Shaw will fight to save Old Trafford career - Neville

LUKE SHAW is determined to save his Manchester United career.

Luke Shaw GETTY

Man Utd defender Luke Shaw has only started three games this season

That’s according to Sky Sports pundit Phil Neville.

The England international has struggled to force his way into Jose Mourinho’s side this season due to the form of converted left-back Ashley Young.

The Portuguese has publicly criticised Shaw a number of times, leading to suggestions that the former Southampton man’s Old Trafford career was finished.

But the 22-year-old has been handed starts in the Premier League and Champions League this month and he played the full game in last night’s Carabao Cup defeat at Bristol City.

“He’s got the quality, he’s got age on his side, he’s got the ability, he’s now got to perform. ”

And Neville, who won six Premier League titles during his time at United, is convinced that Shaw has finally realised he needs to fight for his future.

“Well if you look at the left-back Luke Shaw, he’s playing for his Manchester United career,” he said.

“You look at the fact that they’ve got Ashley Young at left-back at the moment, who’s playing really well, but he’s notoriously a winger.

“Luke Shaw, the penny has to drop soon. He’s got the quality, he’s got age on his side, he’s got the ability, he’s now got to perform.

Ashley Young GETTY

Ashley Young has starred at left-back for Man Utd this season

“The last two games against Moscow and Bournemouth, he has shown signs that the penny has dropped.”

United will aim to bounce back from last night’s heartbreak as they travel to Leicester on Saturday, hoping to close fierce rivals Manchester City’s 11-point lead at the top of the Premier League.
