Ogden, Utah — Ogden City Council has passed an ordinance that will allow backyard chickens in the city.

The Standard-Examiner reports the city council approved the ordinance in a 4-3 vote on Tuesday.

The ordinance had overwhelming support from residents who came to speak on it at the meeting.

Ogden residents will be allowed up to six chickens in owner-occupied homes with at least 2,000 square feet (186 sq. meters) of open backyard space under the ordinance.

City Council Policy Analyst Amy Sue Mabey says the ordinance will go into effect as soon it is signed by Mayor Mike Caldwell or in the next two weeks if he doesn't sign the ordinance.
