Justice P. N. Bhagwati was a champion of public cause and expanded the horizon of the Indian jurisprudence by his creative interpretation of the Constitution, said Chief Judicial Magistrate L. S. Sathiamoorthy at a seminar held on Justice P. N. Bhagwati’s contribution to human rights jurisprudence here on Wednesday.
Mr. Sathiamoorthy said that it was Justice Bhagwati who gave life to the phrase ‘Right to Life’ and his judgement in the Maneka Gandhi Passport case was considered landmark. He said many people at the grassroot level had benefited from his principles.
He recalled that Justice Bhagwati had an association with Madurai and how a letter from A. Mahaboob Batcha, managing trustee, Society for Community Organisation Trust, on the plight of prisoners kept in solitary confinement in Madurai Central Prison prompted him to take up as a writ petition.
Mr. Mahaboob Batcha, senior journalist B. Thirumalai, advocate Karunanidhi and activist S. Selva Gomathy also addressed the seminar, which was held to mark the birth anniversary of Justice Bhagwati.
