Always believed in light at end of the tunnel: Kanimozhi

As the court pronounced her not guilty in the 2G spectrum case, DMK MP Kanimozhi on Thursday said justice has been delivered and that she was always confident she "would see light at the end of the tunnel".

Kanimozhi said it was "atrocious" to be falsely accused in a case to appease the Opposition and that the case was foisted on her by those who did not want the DMK, led by her father M Karunanidhi, to return to power.

"There was a conspiracy and a lot of people had a hand in this. There is no evidence against me and justice has been delivered. I would like to thank everyone who stood by me," she told reporters at the Patiala House complex here.

In a statement, she later said, "I have always believed that I would see the light at the end of the tunnel. I have been waiting for the last six years for this day. The last six years have been harrowing, to say the least. To be falsely accused in a case for a notional loss of Rs 1.76 lakh crore to appease the Opposition that was stalling Parliament is atrocious."

She said she was made an accused just because she was a director in a company for about 20 days, even though she did not attend a single board meeting or sign any document.

She claimed the charges against her, made only to ensure DMK's defeat in the elections, spoke of the "depth to which the system stooped".

Emphasising that she was a journalist and writer and not someone who has taken politics professionally, she said, "Let me tell you, if my aim was to amass wealth through politics, then I would have joined politics in my early twenties, but I came into politics only at 40, when the party thought that I was needed to fill a gap. If I was power-hungry, I would have easily become a minister, but I refused the position," she said.
