Counting of votes began this (Thursday) afternoon in the election to Rangpur City Corporation (RCC).

The balloting in 193 polling stations began at 8 am and continued till 4 pm without any break.

There were seven candidates in the election to vie for the mayoral post while 211 candidates for ward councillors and 65 women candidates for reserved councilors.

Although mayoral candidates of the large parties did not bring any allegation over election, BNP central committee members cast doubt on fair election. They accused ruling party men of driving out their mayoral candidate's polling agents from different centres.

Under the current Election Commission headed by KM Nurul Huda, this election is the second major polls after Comilla City Corporation election held in March last.

The RCC has 3,93,994 voters, of them 1,96,356 male and 1,97,638 female.

Votars cast their votes to elect a mayor, 33 ward councillors and 11 councillors to the reserved seats of women in the election.
