Introducing Dr Love, who solves your relationship riddles in a confusing digital age
My girlfriend wants me to ask her parents for permission to date her. It's 2017. Why should I do this?
It's a request based on the respect she has for her parents. The fact that she wants you to ask them proves she has decided to date you already. Why is this a problem?
I was introduced to a girl at a party recently, and found her interesting. We got along very well and I told her I would chat with her after getting her number. I thought we would go out at some point because she seemed to like me as well. When I got home that night, I checked out her Facebook profile and saw that she likes a few things that I don't like at all. I know this is hardly a way to judge someone I don't even know, but I don't want to ask her out now. Am I being prejudiced for no reason? Should I take what she likes on Facebook at face value and not go out with her? I think I'm being silly, but what a person does on a public profile is a reflection of who that person is, which is why I think I should take it seriously. What do you think?
The Japanese believe we are only completely honest with ourselves, and that we present two other faces to the rest of the world — one to complete strangers and the other to those close to us. If you want to judge someone by what they like or dislike on a social media platform, without trying to understand them better, or trying to figure out if it really is such a bad thing to have views that are divergent from yours, you are doing this person a disservice. If you got along well once, don't you think it makes sense to meet a second time and put aside a social media profile until then? Our parents didn't have access to Facebook, after all.
