An inquest has opened into the death of Justyna Kalandyk

Justyna Kalandyk, 29, was hit by a lorry as she crossed the busy South Circular Road in London while traffic lights were on green.

The driver didn’t stop and Justyna, of nearby Wandsworth, was then hit by another lorry and two further cars.

None of the drivers stopped at the “accident hotspot” in Tulse Hill at 6.45am on Monday of last week.

Yesterday, an inquest into her death was opened and then adjourned at Southwark Coroner’s Court. Coroner Andrew Harris heard the death was being treated as a road traffic collision and her body had been identified by a family member.

I have reason to suspect this lady’s death was unnatural

Coroner Andrew Harris

Mr Harris said: “I understand there is CCTV evidence which shows a pedestrian hit by more than one vehicle while crossing the road. Three or four vehicles, actually.”

Detective Constable Jennifer Burr said police were “treating this as a possible crime”.

Mr Harris said: “I have reason to suspect this lady’s death was unnatural and therefore open an inquest.”

DC Burr applied to the court for the coroner to suspend his investigation while officers continued inquiries.

She said: “No one has been charged as yet but someone may be charged.”

Mr Harris formerly suspended the inquest proceedings for the police to complete their investigation.

The Met Police have said a 49-year-old man driving the first lorry has been interviewed under caution.

A 52-year-old man driving the second car was arrested the day after the tragedy on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.

He was taken into police custody and released under investigation.

The drivers of the other vehicles have been spoken to by police but have not been arrested.

Police still want witnesses to contact them.
