(MENAFN) North Korean guards were conducting a manhunt on a defected soldier when South Korean military started firing warning shots at the guards.

A little while after 23:00 GMT on Wednesday, the defecting North Korean soldier walked across the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) as he appeared at a checkpoint from thick fog.

This incident marks the fourth defecting North Korean soldier within this year as it emerged only weeks after a brutal defection episode.
