President Trump praised Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Wednesday for his help shepherding tax reform through Congress, a day after Senate Republicans passed a historic bill that will slash corporate and individual tax rates beginning in 2018.
"I would like to congratulate [McConnell] on having done a fantastic job strategically and politically on the passing in the Senate of the MASSIVE TAX CUT & Reform Bill," Trump tweeted.
"I could not have asked for a better or more talented partner," he continued, adding that Republicans "will go onto many more VICTORIES!"
I would like to congratulate @SenateMajLdr on having done a fantastic job both strategically & politically on the passing in the Senate of the MASSIVE TAX CUT & Reform Bill. I could have not asked for a better or more talented partner. Our team will go onto many more VICTORIES!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 20, 2017
Senate Republicans voted along party lines just after midnight on Wednesday to pass the $1.5 trillion Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, sending the legislation back to the House for final passage before it arrives on the president's desk.
Final approval of the bill will give GOP lawmakers and the White House their first major legislative victory since taking over both branches of government last November.
The White House is expected to host an event to celebrate the bill's passage late Wednesday afternoon. Though it is unclear whether Trump still plans to sign the legislation into law before Christmas.
