The former Education Secretary has been a vocal critic of the Prime Minister’s approach to separation from the EU and has even voted against the Government in the House of Commons on Brexit legislation.

However, giving her review of the Conservative party’s year on a segment of the late night BBC news analysis programme the MP for Loughborough finally said that she thought Mrs May was doing well.

She said: “The Prime Minister’s personal resilience is extraordinary and actually she demonstrated that in the EU negotiations, getting to phase two in the way she handled the fall out from the DUP not agreeing.”

The DUP threatened to collapse Theresa May's fragile Government after she reached a deal with the EU over the Irish border that they disagreed with.

It took five days of intense negotiations for Mrs May to finalise a deal that appeased the Northern Ireland party.

The Conservative leader has also had to show resilience against the threat of backbench rebellion from her own party.

Last week, Nicky Morgan was one of 11 Tory MPs to vote against the Government in the House of Commons on an amendment that would give MPs the final say on the Brexit deal.

The Government lost the vote tabled by ex-Attorney General Dominic Grieve, after the amendment was backed by 309 MPs to 305.

There are concerns that the loss of the vote weakens the Prime Minister’s negotiating position with Brussels because any deal brokered must be supported by a majority of MPs.

Ms Morgan criticised the Prime Minister for pushing for a “hard brexit” on several occasions since Article 50 was triggered earlier this year.

Following the vote, the former minister said it had given her “no pleasure” in voting against the Government.

But on the BBC she conceded that the Prime Minister’s governance was in the best interests of the UK.

She said: “I think actually, there are definitely elements of strong and stable there and it’s what the country wants.”

It has been a turbulent year for Mrs May after she lost her majority in the House of Commons in June.

Since then she has faced criticism for forming an informal coalition with the DUP, for failing to meet victims of the Grenfell tower fire, and being unable to control her Cabinet.
