The new early signing period can’t come soon enough to most Metro players planning to sign on the dotted line Wednesday.

Almost all committed during the summer and early fall — the sooner to sign, the better. Experts figure roughly 80 percent of recruits will sign early, but around here, only about 23 players, or roughly 50 percent, will be signing. The others will sign during the regular period, which begins Feb. 7.

Cal is the leader overall with five locals who have committed and plan to sign early. San Jose State and Washington State are next in line with three, while Fresno State and Oregon State have secured two commitments each.

Iowa and Tulane are colleges who don’t normally recruit this area too heavily, but those schools landed Marin Catholic-Kentfield quarterback Spencer Petras and California-San Ramon punter-quarterback Ryan Wright, respectively.

Petras had been committed to Oregon State since the summer, but flipped earlier this month after the unusual midseason departure of former coach Gary Andersen. Petras waited to see whom the Beavers hired, and when they picked former Washington assistant Jonathan Smith, he accepted an offer from Iowa.
