Adrian Lewis lost to Kevin Munch.

The two-time world champion was left stunned by an amazing performance from a man who was a 2000/1 outsider to win the tournament.

Munch was playing for the second time in the evening after beating Russian Aleksandr Oreshkin earlier in a preliminary match.

Number seven seed Lewis won the opening set but then Munch just took over.

He hit eight 180s with the highest checkout of 158 and was left lost for words.

Munch said: "I cannot believe it. I am over the moon. I just do not know what to say."

I cannot believe it. I am over the moon. I just do not know what to say.

Kevin Munch speaking after beating Adrian Lewis.

Munch had won through to the second round on his previous world championship appearance six years ago but this result will be remembered for years.

Lewis has had a difficult year after overcoming a back a operation but he was ready to go a long way in this tournament.

And it looked like that would be the case when he won the opening set, taking it on a checkout of double 18.

Lewis then led 2-0 in the second set as the match looked like easily going his way but Munch came storming back to level the match at 1-1 by winning the set 3-2 on double five.

And then, amazingly, Munch won the next set 3-0, taking it on a sensational checkout of 118 with a double 20 finish.

It was a remarkable performance and Munch finished the job by taking the fourth set 3-2, securing his memorable triumph with the sweetest double eight he will ever hit.
