CHANDIGARH: Two drunk youths allegedly molested a BSc second-year student and assaulted her brother when they stopped to buy food from a vendor on the road dividing Sectors 29 and 31 on Sunday night.
The two accused identified as Narinder
Rana, 25, of
Jall Kalan village in Hamirpur district of
Himachal Pradesh, and
Devinder Singh, 25, of Nalati village in Hamirpur, were arrested minutes after the incident, said Gurjeet Kaur, Sector 31 police station house officer.
Both the accused stay in
Zirakpur in a rented accommodation. While Devinder works in an IT company at IT Park, Rana is unemployed.
The siblings were returning home in Sector 19 from Zirakpur around 12.30am. When they crossed the Sector 29-31 roundabout, the woman's brother stopped their car to get some food packed, said their father, an
RTI activist. While she was waiting for her brother near the parked car, the two accused approached her. "One of them held her hand. When she resisted, the accused pulled her hair. She shouted for help. As her brother rushed to rescue her, the accused pushed and punched him and fled in their car," the father said.
The two noted down the registration number of the car and informed the police. A police control room vehicle reached the crime spot and flashed the description of the accused and the registration number of the car. Half an hour later, the two accused were arrested in Sector 32.
Police registered a case against under Sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354 A (sexual harassment and punishment for sexual harassment) and 509 (gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). On Tuesday, a local court sent the two accused in judicial custody for 14 days.
The same night three people, including a Punjab Police cop, has stalked a woman in their SUV in Sector 36. All three were arrested a few minutes later.
