A 16-inch water main broke Wednesday morning on the North Side, flooding an alleyway and street.

The break was reported around 5:30 a.m. ans several San Antonio Water System crews were on scene  at the intersection of Huisache Avenue and Ripley Avenue, which was flooded from the break.

A 16-inch water main is a relatively large pipe, said SAWS spokesperson Anne Hayden, so a large volume of water is flowing through the area. The alley where the break occurred was completely flooded, as was a portion of Ripley Avenue.

Multiple blocks had low water pressure and after crews closed the valves about 10 homes were affected. Repairs will take 10-12 hours, Hayden said.

Given its location in a back alleyway its unlikely that construction caused the break, Hayden said. The more likely culprit is the area's aging infrastructure.

"It's probably just a pipe that gave way," she said.
