Not everyone has a home to return to over the winter holidays. In 1990, especially for the many LGBTQ San Franciscans whose families had shunned them, or who had lost their loved ones to HIV/AIDS, San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus created a one-night oasis for holiday orphans. “Home for the Holidays” has since grown into a thriving annual tradition, with not one, not two, but three Christmas Eve showtimes to accommodate demand.

The sight of the chorus itself is thrilling — it’s an enormous wall of men, and the Castro Theatre’s stage can fit only about half the chorus’ 250 members. The set list includes traditional favorites as well as more playful contemporary numbers, like “I Want a Lumbersexual for Christmas.”

This year’s special guest is Countess Katya Smirnoff-Skye, local drag performer extraordinaire.
