(MENAFN - Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) MOSCOW, Dec 19 (KUNA) -- Russia expressed Tuesday disappointment over the US veto of an Arab-proposed draft resolution concerning the status of Jerusalem.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Washington's reaction to the resolution contradicted its role as a mediator for the Middle East peace process.
The veto also was against the international community stance on the issue of Jerusalem, said the statement.
The Arab-proposed resolution was backed up by 14 nations. The draft resolution was formulated in reaction to US President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and move the American embassy there.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a meeting with Palestinian Presidential Advisor Nabil Shaath discussing the current developments in the Middle East.
Lavrov said that Russia was very concerned with the current status quo in the region, affirming that Moscow will take steps to prevent any unilateral decision on Jerusalem from occurring.
Russian will work on efforts to bring back the peace negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians, affirmed Lavrov. (end) as.gta
