STOCKHOLM, N.Y. (AP) — A man and his three children were killed when an early morning fire tore through their mobile home Tuesday, authorities said.
Troopers responded around 3 a.m. to a report of a fire at the mobile home with an attachment in a rural town near the Canadian border.
Troopers said when they arrived on the scene they learned four people had been trapped inside the home and died.
The mother jumped out of a bedroom window, but the three children were found in a back bedroom. The father was found by the front door, according to June Wood, a county coroner.
"It appeared that he was trying to get to the children and collapsed," Wood said.
Police have identified the victims as 55-year-old William Bugbee, his daughters, 5-year-old Allazza Bugbee and 6 -year-old Alicia Bugbee, and stepdaughter, 14-year-old Shaylee Baxter.
"It's very hard," Wood said. "Three children."
Bugbee's wife, 36-year-old Carrie Bugbee, is the mother of all three children and was taken to a hospital for evaluation, according to police.
Troopers say the cause of the blaze is under investigation.
