Pune: The Savitribai Phule Pune University (
SPPU) has changed the rules of passing for students pursuing a law degree. The varsity has now made it mandatory for them to score a minimum of 40% in every subject. This apart, they must also score at least 40% aggregate in all the course subjects.
The university's academic council, which met on Tuesday, took this decision as the previous rule of a minimum of 50% aggregate to pass was opposed by several students. Moreover, the pass percentage of the law course was also low.
As per the previous passing rule, to pass the exam, a law student had to score a minimum 35% in each of the course subjects. However, the minimum aggregate of all subjects put together was set at 50%. The university had received several complaints, from students and teachers alike, regarding this high aggregate cut-off, which was also leading to a very poor pass percentage.
The demand to lower the passing score was long due, and it was finally passed by the academic council on Tuesday, a statement issued by the university said. Though the SPPU has reduced the aggregate cut-off from 50% to 40%, it has increased the minimum score required for individual subjects to 40% from 35%.
The decision was taken considering the Bar Council rules and regulations. The principals and teachers of all law colleges in Pune, that are under the university, were consulted before this decision was taken.
