A blanket of fog drooped over Houston and Harris County overnight, leading the National Weather Service to issue a dense fog advisory for the Greater Houston region.
The National Weather Service warns that until 10 a.m. this morning the fog may reduce visibility to just 1/4 mile or less, causing hazardous traffic conditions as rush hour kicks off.
Counties under the fog advisory include Harris, Fort Bend, Galveston, Jackson, Matagorda, Waller, Austin, Brazoria, Burleson, Chambers, Colorado, Washington and Wharton counties.
The fog has essentially shut down ship traffic at the Houston Ship Channel, said U.S. Coast Guard Chief Joergens Reno. No ships are boarding and no ships are able to enter the port, he said.
A total of 40 ships are waiting to come inbound, between Houston and Galveston/Texas City, and 14 are waiting to leave the port.
Throughout Tuesday, heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected throughout much of the area in two rounds, with one coming this morning extending into the afternoon and another this evening, the National Weather Service said.
