Silke Marriott, who set up the Givealittle page, said Sauerwein was thrown off and hit the ground hard, head first. She received severe head injuries and went into a coma.

Her German family were able to see her body via Skype to say goodbye.

Sauerwein was a registered organ donor. As her brain function had stopped her parents agreed with the doctors to turn off her life support on December 16 and grant her "last wish".

The family want to bring Sauerwein home to Germany and bury her in her hometown.

"As an organ donor Kim's spirit will live on in the many she will help," Marriott wrote.

"Losing a loved one is especially hard before Christmas and being so far away makes matters more complicated and prolonged.

"Nothing but time can help them to overcome their loss of Kim."

Any funds raised through the Givealittle will go towards the family's expenses of transporting Sauerwein's body to Germany and any costs incurred in her medical care.

Sauerwein's father is flying from Germany to arrive in New Zealand this Sunday.

Any money raised exceeding these costs will be donated to the Westpac chopper.
