The Legend of Zelda series looks to be getting a new Nintendo Switch games release to follow the huge success of Breath of the Wild.

While it won’t comes as much of a bombshell, it’s surprising to hear that Nintendo are already talking the next phase in the franchise.

The news of new Zelda content for the Switch comes from two sources, both of which point to more Link action in the future.

Zelda creator Eiji Aonuma reportedly confirmed as much in an interview for the upcoming Breath of the Wild Master Books, revealing that work on the next title is in progress.

But there’s also been other talk of what’s to come next in the series, this time in an interview with IGN.

Director Hidemaro Fujibayashi gave more insight on the series, adding: “I can’t say at this point if it will be in sequels or in continuations, or what form it will take, but I definitely have lots of ideas and lots of motivation right now.

“I think while we were working on both the main game and the DLC, it was a process of constantly getting lots of different, new ideas as we refined the game, and finding new things we wanted to do.

“Even in situations like this, talking to people and finding out that people want to pet dogs gives me a lot of motivation, a lot of ideas for things we could put into the game.”

As you might expect, whatever is being worked on will likely take a long time to come to fruition.

The timeline between past Zelda games suggests a long wait, however, it’s fair to say that Breath of the Wild took longer, due in part to the Switch.

There'll also be the incentive to release a new Zelda game on the succesful Switch, with no guarantee that it's lifecycle will run as long as other past consoles.

Aonuma also shared his thoughts on the DLC process, making it sound like we could be seeing more for future games.

“What we learned from the DLC this time around is that it's almost like raising the world or enhancing the world,” Aonuma told IGN.

“In the past, we always had to start from zero again, to completion.

"Usually we'd be thinking, ‘oh, I wish we could add this, we could do that.’ What we couldn't do in that game, we would start fresh in a new game.

“But because we did a DLC, we realized it's a great way to kind of just improve that world, and kind of enhance it, and kind of raise it like your own child.”
