The salary will be paid at Grade 6, £33,518 to £39,992 per annum, plus £2,923 per annum London Allowance.
This is for two posts fixed Term contracts, one for 1 year and one for 2 years.

Both posts are Full-time – 100 % full time equivalent

Heart failure and coronary heart disease are major clinical conditions affecting an estimated 2.7M people in the UK alone. Both of these conditions result in a fundamental reduction in the ability of heart muscle to effectively pump and deliver blood to the body. While this deficiency in the heart is easily detected using medical imaging, dissecting the causes of reduced heart performance in terms of its implications for muscle health remain an open challenge for the treatment of heart failure and evaluation of patient treatment.

This post seeks to employ two RAs who will address these key challenges through image analysis / computational modeling of cardiac magnetic resonance elastography and through computational biomechanics modeling of the heart through disease progression in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

The first post is for the EPSRC funded project Imaging Cardio-Mechanical Health aims to address requirements of assessing muscle characteristics in the heart by directly measuring the health of the heart muscle through the development of cardiac Magnetic Resonance Elastography (cMRE). Using state-of-the art magnetic resonance imaging and biomechanical modelling, this project will provide a novel noninvasive modality (cMRE) for directly measuring the alterations in muscle properties, determining the mechanical pathophysiology behind reduced function. Integrating new imaging sequences with biomechanical processing software, this project will aim to systematically develop, verify and validate these tools using 3D printed phantoms, ex vivo animal heart models, and patient / volunteer data.

The second post is for the EPSRC Healthcare Technology Challenge Award on Adaptive, Multiscale, Data-infused Cardiac biomechanics modeling for Diagnostic and Prognostic Assessment. This project aims to provide computational modeling tools for assessing the progression of disease and outcomes of surgery in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy patients. A core challenge in this area is the determination of post-surgical outcomes beyond the 6-month time frame. In this project, we well collect comprehensive MRI data in porcine (along with invasive data, rheology) and HCM patients to characterize the remodeling processes within the heart. This project will involve teamwork across centres (EU, UK, USA) as well as close interaction with PhD students and other RAs in our team.

For these challenging projects we are searching an expert in computational modeling, biomechanics, elastography and imaging. This applicant will ideally have experience in computational cardiac modelling and, in particular, patient-specific heart modelling. The applicant should have experience working with MRI data, image processing and image-based analysis.
