Surat: Five people got a new lease of life when family members of a 67-year-old farm labourer, who was declared brain dead, decided to donate his kidneys, liver and eyes here on Monday.
Manu Mehta, a resident of Mahuva taluka of Surat district and father of four sons, fell off from his bicycle after collision with a motorcycle near Bamaniya village on December 17.
Mehta had gone there to supply milk to the milk cooperatives when the accident happened. He fell unconscious and was treated at Mahuva health centre and Sardar Hospital in Bardoli before being brought to Institute of Neurosciences, Surat. Mehta was diagnosed with brain haemorrhage and declared brain dead on December 18.
A non-governmental organization contacted his sons Mukesh, Nilesh, Bharat and Jayesh and convinced them to donate their father's organs. They said, "We have read news of organs being transported from Surat to Mumbai to save people's lives. If our father's organs can save anyone's life, we will be glad to donate them."
A team from the IKDRC accepted donation of kidneys and liver, whereas his eyes were accepted by Lokdrashti Chakshu Bank. The kidneys were transplanted in the bodies of Tansukh Chopda (41), a resident of Bhavnagar and K C Dayanand Nambiar (58), a resident of Ahmedabad. The liver was transplanted in the body of Mahesh Patel (47), a resident of Gandhinagar and eyes were transplanted into two blind persons.
