Sexual misconduct by those in positions of power is so widespread, it seems, the issue has impacted most entities, including the lawmakers representing Texans in congress and in the state legislature.

The New York Times first reported in October that movie producer Harvey Weinstein was accused of harassing and assaulting dozens of women over multiple decades. Since then, dozens of men in Hollywood, media, politics and other fields have been accused of sexual harassment and assault.

Women began sharing their stories of being harassed or assaulted on social media using the hashtag "#MeToo." TIME Magazine named the "silence breakers" the people of year for speaking out on sexual misconduct.

Since women and men have come forward with stories of sexual assault and harassment, at least five current or former Texas lawmakers have been accused of sexual misconduct.
