The two pit bulls suspected of mauling their owner to death during a walk in the woods have been euthanized, police confirmed Monday.

Bethany Lynn Stephens, 22, of Virginia was killed Thursday evening while walking her two dogs, Tonka and Pacman.

In a news conference, Goochland County Sheriff James Agnew described Stephens' chest, face and arm injuries as "extremely gruesome" and said the investigation was made difficult because "the damage was so extensive that there was nothing left to compare bite marks to."

The two dogs were put down Saturday evening with the permission of the family, but Agnew said authorities considered shooting the dogs at the scene.

"While we were talking about strategies to catch the dogs, we turned and looked, the dogs had gone back over to the body, and I observed, as well as four other deputy sheriffs, the dogs eating the ribcage on the body," Agnew said.

Eventually, authorities captured the dogs with the help of the victim's friend.

Police are still investigating Stephens' death, but Agnew noted the possibility of foul play was unlikely and that the body's damage indicated the 22-year-old was most likely killed by a smaller animal, and not a bear like some suggested.
