Woman said her boyfriend accidentally hit the infant with a phone, but doctors disagree.
SARASOTA COUNTY -- A couple have been arrested on charges of abuse after an infant was hospitalized last week with head injuries.
According to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, on the evening of Dec. 12 Ashley M. Finnegan, 29, called 911 to her home in the Venice area, saying her boyfriend, George Gluschenko Jr., 34, had thrown a cellphone onto their bed, accidentally injuring a 2-month-old girl. Finnegan decided not to wait for an ambulance and took the baby to the hospital. Due to the nature of her injuries, she was taken to John Hopkins All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, where doctors determined that her injuries could not have been caused by a phone. Instead, her injuries appeared to have been caused by physical abuse.
The victim may have suffered two "very high force impacts," according to the Sheriff's Office.
Gluschenko is charged with aggravated child abuse and Finnegan is charged with aggravated child abuse: accessory after the fact and neglect of a child with great bodily harm. Both are being held in the Sarasota County jail without bail.
The baby, whose injuries could result in permanent disability, is still in the hospital but is very responsive, the Sheriff's Office reports.
