Members of the Gujarati community celebrating BJP’s victory in Gujarat elections by distributing sweets  K Shijith

KOCHI: The streets of Mattancherry wore a festive look with members of the Gujarati community out distributing sweets to celebrate BJP’s win in the Assembly elections on Monday. The community, which has a strong presence in the city, have always kept themselves abreast of the happenings back home. Every election that takes place in Gujarat has them waiting anxiously for the results.  This time around, they consider it a big victory for fellow Gujarati Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“As a Gujarati, I feel immense pride. BJP has passed the litmus tests with flying colours. The results show how successful the successive BJP rule in Gujarat has been for the past two decades. We feel it a victory against corruption. I also feel this is a reward for the BJP government,” Arvind Shah, trader and a member of the Gujarati community at Mattanchery.

He said, when BJP first came into power, the state faced acute power shortage. “Today the state has surplus power. This is just one example, but an important one. So it is a given that the state has progressed a lot. Evidently, the people in Gujarat took all this into consideration before casting their votes. It feels incredibly remarkable to have a fellow Gujarati leading the country into a new era,” said Arvind.

Chetan and his fellow North Indians who were distributing sweets, said we are very happy. “It is a joyous moment. All our eyes will be now on the new government. We believe this government will take Gujarat to new heights. We will be keenly observing the political developments in the state as we have been doing for the past many decades,” said Chetan.

Some of them have been BJP supporters for as long as the party existed. “My family has been supporting the party for generations. We are glad the efforts of fellow party men are seeing results,” added Chetan.
“As of now, we don’t see BJP getting such a majority in Kerala. The social, cultural and political approach in Kerala is different. May sometime in future the right wing will be able to get a footing here,” he said.
