Belagavi:
College Road, one of the busiest in the city, is "
zero tolerance", according to
Belagavi traffic police. No
traffic violations are supposed to be tolerated on this road by the traffic police. However, the traffic police are not bothered about it.
There are many colleges and schools along this road and thousands of autorickshaws, school buses, two-wheelers and cars ply here every day.
Many college students ride extremely recklessly, resulting in many accidents, say sources. Parking is another major issue here. A majority of students come to the college by riding motorbikes and park the vehicles beside the road.
The traffic police have realized that parking on the road is causing congestion.
Thus, the traffic police and
Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) served notices to the management of all colleges to earmark parking space on their campuses. Following the notices, many colleges including Jyoti College, Maratha Mandal and Beynon Smith, facilitated space for parking vehicles. Some noted colleges at College Road did not respond to the notice, but the
BCC and police are silent on the issue.
Vishal Raikar, a shopkeeper, said many heavy vehicles ply on this road. Traffic jams are common here and even ambulances have problems manoeuvring on the road. He said that many complaints were lodged on the issue, but no action was taken.
Traffic ACP M I Muppinmath, said, "We have taken strict measures against illegal parking in major parts of the city. We have plans to clear illegal parking at College Road next week. Once the sports events of the police department are over, the drive will be started," he said.
